Happy Birthday, ADA!

This week marks the 24th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. This landmark legislation has improved the lives of countless individuals by prohibiting discrimination and ensuring equal opportunity and accommodations for people with disabilities.
The ADA has been successful at addressing many of the inequities facing Americans living with disabilities – but not all. For example, many provider offices in MA lack equipment to serve patients with disabilities (e.g., lifts, adjustable tables). At Commonwealth Care Alliance, we have made a commitment to providing appropriate care and services to individuals with disabilities. In recent months, our clinical affiliate, Commonwealth Community Care, opened new offices in Lawrence, Springfield, and Framingham featuring services and equipment for members with disabilities, including wheelchair-accessible scales for accurate weighing and height-adjusting exam tables.
Underscoring our commitment to individuals with disabilities, a number of Commonwealth Care Alliance staff members attended the A.D.A. Celebration Day, held today on Boston City Hall Plaza. A free event for “children, families, & individuals of all abilities,” the celebration featured a Disability Pride Parade, along with food, music, and helpful information.
