An article posted to Modern Healthcare quotes Commonwealth Care Alliance President Lois Simon on the possibility of extending the duals demonstration programs beyond their three-year timeframes.
Recently, the Obama administration said it would need more time to determine if the duals demonstrations have been effective in managing health benefits for low-income and disabled individuals who are on both Medicaid and Medicare. As a result, the administration offered the 12 states that been participating in the duals demonstrations the chance to extend their programs another two years. According to the article, the states have signaled their interest in continuing the programs.
Favoring the two-year extension, Simon states “(T)his is a very important program which drastically changes how the most vulnerable people in our healthcare system are cared for, and we feel five years is a more appropriate timeline to see its full potential.”
