Police receive training on mental health
In cities across the country, police officers are receiving special training on mental illness. The goal is to help change the way officers view mental illness and diffuse encounters that could end with the use of force. The training, experts say, is necessary, as “people with mental illnesses are over-represented among civilians involved in police shootings,” and individuals with mental health issues who are unable to receive adequate treatment are “arrested time and again for minor offenses like disorderly conduct and petty theft.
Dogs can help seniors stay healthy
A study published in the Gerontologist presents a strong connection between dog ownership and senior health. The study, which looked at Americans age 50 and older, found that “those who walked dogs had lower body mass indexes, fewer limitations in daily activities, fewer chronic conditions and fewer visits to the doctor. They also got exercise more often and did it more vigorously.”
